River City Flood Ready!

Reforestation at Edward A. Khayat Memorial Park

Innovative Solutions for a More Resilient Moss Point

Edward A. Khayat Memorial Park, a beloved community space in Moss Point, Mississippi, is undergoing a transformative redesign to address persistent flooding and pollution challenges. This initiative leverages Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to create a stormwater park that combines innovative stormwater management with enhanced recreational opportunities.

The northern section of the park, currently undeveloped, will be the focal point of this project. Through strategic reforestation the park will become a multi-functional space designed to mitigate flooding, improve water quality, and offer valuable nature based education to the Moss Point community.

Key Objectives

  1. Mitigate Flooding:
Reduce the impact of heavy rain events by increasing water absorption and slowing runoff through green infrastructure.

  2. Improve Water Quality:
Filter pollutants from stormwater before it reaches Bayou Casotte.

  3. Enhance and Restore Ecosystem Services:
Bayou Casotte and surrounding waters are especially important to the Moss Point community, their resources provide economic benefits for tourism, fisheries, and recreational activities. Local estuaries are culturally important, providing the community with activities traditionally passed down through generations, such as fishing and bird watching.

  4. Creating a Framework for Replication:
Develop resources and guides to help other communities implement similar solutions.

  5. Hydrologic Connectivity:
Restore hydrologic connections and enhance limited forested riparian corridors and emergent wetlands in the Bayou Casotte watershed.
  6. Create Habitat:
Provide valuable wetland habitat for wading birds and riparian stopover habitat for migratory birds.
